Thanks so much for this. For anyone searching hopefully google picks this up, I used this process to successfully fix Cisco’s FMCv OVF creating a VM in VMWare workstation 14. Until Cisco fixes the VM packages this will be my go to fix for VMWare Workstation. This guide explains how to import virtual machine images in the vendor neutral OVF and OVA format into VMware and Virtualbox. I will use a ova image from howtoforge.com as example here. The vmware images from howtoforge can be used as basis for test and production servers. Here is the list of all VM Images available from Howtoforge.

There is a python module called pysphere which does the work for you. There is one more module called pyxenter which in turn use pysphere I guess.
I have not played around much with these packages though :-)

You can import an Open Virtualization Format (OVF) virtual machine and run it in VMware Fusion. You can import both .ovf and .ova files.
VMware Fusion converts the virtual machine from OVF format to VMware runtime (.vmx) format.
OVF is a platform-independent, efficient, extensible, and open packaging and distribution format for virtual machines. For example, you can import OVF virtual machines exported from VMware Workstation™ into Fusion. You can import OVF 1.0 and later files only.
You can also use the standalone OVF Tool to convert an OVF virtual machine to VMware runtime format. For information about using the OVF Tool, see the OVF Tool User Guide on the VMware Web site.
Download or copy the OVF virtual machine file (.ovf or .ova file) to a location that is accessible to your Mac.

From the VMware Fusion menu bar, select File > Import.
The Import Library window appears, along with a dialog box for browsing to the location of OVF file.

After the import is complete, the virtual machine appears in the virtual machine library and in a separate virtual machine window. The virtual machine is shut down.
